eDairy Extension - Managing by Dairy Famers and their family members


Mrs.Iresha Tennakoon, wife of young dairy farmers from Giriulla trained ICT at Dambadeniya Development Foundation - ICT Centre - Narammala and now she is managing the SMS request transactions and trilingual web administration. Also you can communicate the centre through google chat or skype.

Evaluation process - Final Touch at ICTA

The eDairy extension system was presented to the IT experts in Information and Communication Technology agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA). The presentation was conducted by Mr.Sunil Rodrigo - Senior Manager - Dambadeniya Development Foundation and stated that all the stack holders of this project wanted access the web based e-dairy SMS transaction log entries to evaluate the real out put of their own sectors. Mr.Patrick Roy - IT Manager , Dambadeniya Development Foundation - explain the technical impact on young farmers in the village. Mr.Sriyananda Rathnayaka- Project Co-ordinator ICTA, Mr.Jaliya Jayawardena - IT Consultant, Ms. Anjela Samarasinghe - Consultant from Pricewaters Coopers, Mr.Denuka Perera,Mr.Razmin Kareem, Mr.Mario Fernandopulle, Mr.Sanjaya Karunasena, Mr.Thushara Suraweera from ICTA also evaluate the project.

The ediary extension gathered the farmers and their animal details , analyzed and created a database, which is accessible to relevant higher authority to any where. This is a begging of dairy industry in Sri Lanka. This will give the accurate information to the decision makers.

Famer Training at KOSWATTE


Koswatte is an interior village from Narammala, which has very enthusiastic farmers team of 35-40 members. They supply there daily collected fresh milk to Cargill Pvt Ltd. Also they have good relationship with private public sector state holders, those who directly /indirectly linked with dairy industry. These farmers also trained to access the SMS enabled system on 15th of September 2009. And as per the farmers request , the Dambadeniya Development Foundation offered a ICT Training program for the Farmer's young children.

eDairy Touch Screen System launched at Milco

A eDairy Touch Screen System was launched at Milco-Milk Chilling Centre at Loluwagoda. A training session was conducted by Dambadeniya Development Foundation to the Centre Manager/Operators to empower the farmers through ICT. Mr.Rohan Goonasekara- Centre Manager of Milco (Pvt) Ltd at loluwagoda stated that this is a significant project that the Ministry of Livestock carried out last 30 years to empower dairy farmers.

Mr.S.A.Wijerathne of #26, Kadangamuwa, Loluwagoda - (a dairy farmer supplies 15 ltrs of average milk per day) trained to send SMS and access touch screen, stated that he was totally discourage in the fresh milk industry in Sri Lanka, but with these type of technology are involves and all the stack holders co-operates, in future the dairy will be the industry that can make an impact on country economy. And he is more and more encouraged to buy more milking animals.

SMS enabled Services at Dambadeniya















The farmers from Muthugala, Dambadeniya are now equipped with SMS enabled services, which is launched by Dambadeniya Development Foundation, with the concept of Mr.Sunil Rodrigo - Senior Dairy Technologist (SL). The farmers those who have registered under eDairy will have a farmer code. Using this unique code , can access the information/request services by using SMS on a mobile phone/CDMA phone from any where.

"SMS Makes life more easier" - Happy Famers

මෙම වැඩසටහන නිසා කිරිගොවීන් වන අප සැම‍ගේ ජීවිතයට නව නැගුමක්
Farmers were happy to use the SMS enable information system introduced by Dambadeniya Development Foundation. The farmer group also undergone a training on How to use Touch screen system to make a request. Here a team of happy farmers with their touch screen system.


They also created a FAQ for the future reference, which enable them to co-ordination among their group for sharing their own knowledge and experience.

The farmers and their family information have been updated regularly, in order to maintain 100% accuracy on records. Not only the farmers details but also their animals details with average milk yield and medication history of animals also been updated to make sure of achieve the primary goals of e-dairy extension.

e-Dairy Press Conference


The press conference of e-Dairy Project was held in Kurugegala on 8th of July 2009 under the patronage of Provincial Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Hon.Minister Shantha Bandara. The objective of this program was explained by Mr.Sunil Rodrigo - Dairy Technologist and e-Dairy concept creator. He also stated that the assistace provided by ICTA and Dambadeniya Development Founation on Dairy Industry is remarkable and will achieve 100% growth whithin 24 months.



Also the Minister stated "The country is looking to apply latest technology to Livestock and Agriculture sectors, to attract the younger generation. Our only goal is to achieve the self sufficient with minimal import of agrobase products"

Mr.J.M.G.B. Jayasundara - Chief Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock - NWP stated that it is most appropritate time that this program has been commenced and we are fortunate to launch it in within the North Western Province. Mr.W.G.Dayananda - Secretary to Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock - NWP stated that " This is a potetional program where we would be concentrating more on the outcome of the system. This also can be apply to other sectors too. So we will be including this program on our trategic plan. Mr.T.G.U.B.Thamugala - Secretary to Chief Minister - NWP Soon after the success at Dambadeniya / Narammala Division we would like to expand this to the entire province too.

Farmer Awarness at Beminigalla


An awareness program was conducted by the e-Dairy team at Beminigalla village for 27 dairy farmers on 17th of June 2009. The farmers were well aware of the system and ready to access it. The " SANASA" (rural economic Program) and Milco - (milk processor ) also particiapted as service providers. The training was conducted by Mr.Dammika Kulathunga - a well trained edairy farmer.

e Dairy Presentation - For National and Provincial Heads in the Department of Animal Production and Health


The e-dairy SMS enable system presented to the National and provincial heads in the Department of Animal Production and Health on 15th of June 2009 at Institute of Continuous Education, Kandy. The system was demonstrated by the e-Dairy team and the participants were appreciated the effort that which enable the achieve the objectives of dairy industry in Sri Lanka.


For the presentation all the Provincial Directors ,Provincial Veterinary Surgeons, Officials of Veterinary Research Institute, Officials of Livestock Development, Members of Association of Animal Production and Health , Intellectuals from University Of Peradeniya, Offcials of Department of Animal Science were participated.



The presentation submitted to Hon.Minister C.B.Rathnayaka - Minister of Livestock Development , Hon. Shantha Bandara - Provincial Minister of Livestock Development , Small Irrigation and Agriculture - North Western Province, and Hon. Dr.Navarathnarajah - Provincial Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development - Eastern Province.

Birth Success rate at Narammala Division


Total targeted birth at Narammala division for the 1st quarter is 1250 animals, but unfortunately only 116 births has succeeded. When comparing with previous chart it shows the no of Artificial Insemination carried out during this period. So out of that amount 116 have succeeded (30%).

The Current Status of Milk Industry in Sri Lanka


According to the National Statistics 2003-2008, there are 532520 cows are available in Sri Lanka. But out of this amount only 249,315 (47%) animals are milking cows, rest are dried cows.
The monthly average milk production is 14,370,200 ltrs and herd average is 27 per month. And you will realize that the herd average is just 1.9ltrs.

The e-Dairy System - How the System Works

Initial discussion to implement the e-dairy system for Western Province

The North Western Province - Department of Animal Production and Health, had the discussion on e-dairy system to improve the zonal animal production and health. The discussion chaired by Dr.(Mrs) S.D.K.Herath - Provincial Director - Department of Animal Production and Health , North Western Province, held on 22-05-2009 at Dambadeniya Development Foundation. Dr.Nimal Jayaweera - District Veterinary Surgeon - Kurunegala , was addressed the issues which impact on the dairy field in future. The Veterinary officials of North Western Province were participated and expressed their views on that day.

Usage of Mobile Technology Dairy Development in Sri Lanka


Nestle farmers - a group of farmers, those who sell their raw milk to Nestle Company, from Dambadeniya experiencing the validity of mobile technology and it strength. The farmers are expecting atleast 10% of growth (without any additional investment) before end of this year.

Touch Screen usability


The farmers those who haven't the mobile phone accessibility, using the touch screen panel to send a message (SMS) to the Veterinary Surgeon/Livesstock Development Instructor / AI Technician, for their requirements. The touch screen was installed at the Milk purchasing centre , where farmers will be visiting daily.

The e-dairy system advanced for University Of Colombo




The e-dairy intervention has been reached its highest innovative ICT application in Sri Lanka. This system taken up as a industrial innovation of using Information technology for the development of dairy industry. The research team University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) inspected the system and stated "This system opened our eyes how communities can involve in the development of this country through ICT" The team was led by Mr.H.W.H.Premachndra and Mr.U.D.U.Indika - the Instructors of UCSC, under the guidance of w.Chaminda Priyashantha and Mrs.Girty Gamage - Co-ordinator External Degree Centre - UCSC

The Veterinary officers of Narammala and Alawwa, have commenced the training of ICT , for their day-today activities. The Dambadeniya ICT Centre is providing the interactive training with high quality. The training of "ICT4VET" commenced at Dambadeniya Development Foundation in order to fulfill the requirement of accessing e-dairy system.

Famers Awareness on e- Dairy System at Dambadeniya



The farmers of Maravita/Udawela Watta/ Muthugala had opportunity of accessing the e-Dairy system through their milk collecting centre at Dambadeniya. The preliminary discussion and awareness was held by the leadership of Mr.Sunil Rodrigo. The farmers are so thankful to the officials for providing such system to them. Mr.J.P.Herath - a farmer of Panapitiya watte, stated that this is a good opportunity to involve his young son to take part in the dairy industry. He also added that where ever there is application of ICT invloves, that can attract young people/ future generation.

e Dairy - an upliftment of dairy industry in Sri Lanka



The e Dairy extension system was presented to Prof.Tissa Vitharana-Minister of Science and Technology by Mr.Sunil Rodrigo - an expert in Dairy Industry in Sri Lanka on 28-03-2009 at The Sri Lanka Foundation Institute - Colombo 7. The Minister was so impressed to hear that the Dairy Farmers are capable of use latest ICT technology for their day to day farming activities. Also he has stated that it is remarkable that all the sectors of dairy field, to come up with such constructive sustainable system in the year of ICT. He thanked Mr.Sunil Rodrigo's leadership and commitment on application of ICT for Dairy Development.
